Here Be Dragons Square Pattern

Here Be Dragons square by Tuppence

Design inspired by Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman

I fashioned this square using the red and yellow color blocks found in the coat of arms of Llewelyn the Great of Wales, one of the main characters in the book. Instead of a lion in each square, I put an 'L' for Llewelyn and a 'J' for Joanna spanning across the different-colored blocks to represent the divided loyalties each of them had to deal with.

The royal standard of the modern-day Prince of Wales uses the same lion-covered red-and-yellow flag of Llewelyn, but with a green shield in the middle, upon which is a crown, so I used a border of green for my square to represent how English domination was closing in on Wales during the time of Llewelyn.

The Friday Night Knitting Club Square Pattern

The Friday Night Knitting Club square by Tuppence

Design inspired by The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs

In the story, the central character lovingly calls her daughter 'muffingirl', presumably because she likes to bake muffins and other goodies and does so throughout the story. So I decided that this square would have a muffin to remind me of this book.

Yarn needle

Gauge: 17 stitches and 23 rows = 4" x 4" in stockinette stitch

This square is knitted with Fuchsia in stockinette stitch for the background, Turqua in 1/1 ribbing for the muffin cup and Cornmeal in seed stitch for the muffin top.

Confessions of an Amateur Believer Square Pattern

Confessions of an Amateur Believer square by Tuppence

Design inspired by Confessions of an Amateur Believer by Patty Kirk

The paradoxical words of the agonized father in Mark 9:24--"I believe Master, help my unbelief"--have been close to my heart during the many struggles with faith I've experienced throughout my life. They immediately came to mind when I wanted a square for My Reading Afghan to remind me of Patty Kirk's story of her struggles with faith.

Size: Approximately 8 x 8 inches

Materials used:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn (or any worsted-weight yarn) in Royal and White

Size 8 knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Yarn needle

Gauge: 17 stitches and 23 rows = 4" x 4" in stockinette stitch

This square is knitted with Royal, and then after the knitting is completed, the verse is added in backstitch with White.

Cast on 34 stitches with Royal. (Even-numbered rows are the right side.)

Rows 1-3: Knit.

Rows 4-42: Even-numbered rows (the right side) are knitted across. Odd-numbered rows (the wrong side) are knit 2, purl 30, knit 2.

Rows 43-45: Knit.

Row 46: Bind off as if to knit.

Add backstitch alphabet embroidery in White to complete the square. Weave in all yarn ends.

Any backstitch alphabet can be used for the embroidery that is added in White after the square is knitted. I used this one:

http://www.freepatternsonline.com/xscharts/page/abc9.htm

It is helpful to map out the verse on graph paper first to make sure of the best arrangement. Knitter's graph paper with the squares in the desired gauge proportions can be created here:

http://www.tata-tatao.to/knit/matrix/e-index.html

Because the graph of this graph paper is in the actual proportions of the knitting, charting the embroidery on this graph paper will yield a closer approximation to what the embroidery will look like than on regular graph paper.

Size 8 knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Yarn needle

Gauge: 17 stitches and 23 rows = 4" x 4" in stockinette stitch

Cast on 34 stitches with White. (Odd-numbered rows are the right side.)

Knit 4 rows in garter stitch (knit each row).

Then commence chart, counting the stitches currently on needles as row 1 on chart. The chart is worked on the center 30 stitches in stockinette stitch, odd-numbers rows being the right side and even-numbered rows being the wrong side. The first 2 stitches and the last 2 stitches of every row (both right-side rows and wrong-side rows) are knitted in garter stitch and not included in the stockinette stitch chart. The chart is worked for 38 rows.

The stitches of rows 1 and 2 and the stitches of rows 37 and 38 of the chart are all White.

The Burgundy bricks are knitted in stockinette stitch at the same time along with the White, alternating colors along those rows as you knit.

The letters of the word 'FAITH' are embroidered in duplicate stitch after the knitted chart is completed. The stitches in rows 14 through 25 should be knit in stockinette stitch with White during the knitting phase and then the duplicate stitches in each color added later.

Once the knitting of the chart is completed, knit 4 more rows in garter stitch (knit each row) in White across all 34 stitches, binding off on the last row as if to knit.

After all knitting is completed, add duplicate stitches for the letters of the word 'FAITH' according to the chart. Weave in all ends.

Mistress Of the Art of Death Square Pattern

Mistress of the Art of Death Square by Tuppence

Design inspired by Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin

This is the first square I designed for My Reading Afghan. It is inspired by and represents the first reading selection of the Ravelry Book Club--Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin.

The description of the design components (and what parts of the book inspired them) includes spoilers, so I won't include that description and explanation here. It is available in a post on the Ravelry Book Club group page on Ravelry:
