The Friday Night Knitting Club Square Pattern

The Friday Night Knitting Club square by Tuppence

Design inspired by The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs

In the story, the central character lovingly calls her daughter 'muffingirl', presumably because she likes to bake muffins and other goodies and does so throughout the story. So I decided that this square would have a muffin to remind me of this book.

Size: Approximately 8 x 8 inches

Materials used:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn (or any worsted-weight yarn) in Fuchsia (color A), Turqua (color B) and Cornmeal (color C)

Size 8 knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Yarn needle

Gauge: 17 stitches and 23 rows = 4" x 4" in stockinette stitch

This square is knitted with Fuchsia in stockinette stitch for the background, Turqua in 1/1 ribbing for the muffin cup and Cornmeal in seed stitch for the muffin top.

Cast on 34 stitches with A. (Even-numbered rows are the right side.)

Rows 1-4: With A knit.

Row 5: With A knit 2, purl 12, drop A, attach B and purl 5 with B, attach new thread of A and with A purl 2, pass B thread over A thread (in preparation for next row), then with A purl 11, knit 2.

(Note when looking at the right side of work before beginning row 6, counting from left to right, there will be 14 stitches A, 5 stitches B and 15 stitches A on the needle. Dropped yarn and yarn changes are always kept on the wrong side of the work.)

Row 6: With A knit 13, drop A over B, pick up B and knit 3, purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, knit 3, drop B over A, pick up A and knit 2, pass B over A and then with A knit 10.
